Clonmacnois is located on the Banks of the River Shannon. The ruins of the churches, known as the seven churches of Clonmacnois and the two 12th - century towers still survive and are protected as part of a national monument. It is the burial place of many High Kings from East and West of Ireland. It is also the resting place of Rory O 'Connor, the last high king of Ireland, who is buried in the 10th Century Cathedral. St. Ciaran founded his monastery here in 544AD. It benefitted from the patronage of powerful Gaelic nobles who aspired to be high kings. The ruins also tell the story of the attacks it endured from many quarters over the centuries.Clonmacnois fell into decline in the 13th century and became the seat of an impoverished bishop.
